About us

EFID is a joint-programme led by foundations. Its mission is to improve the lives of people with dementia by enabling a dementia-friendly and inclusive environments in communities across Europe. EFID supports local organisations active on dementia-friendly initiatives through award and grant making, capacity development and networking.

The EFID awards “Living well with Dementia in the Community”, launched in 2012 and 2014, supported 20 projects in 11 countries that encouraged the dissemination of good practice and gave people with dementia a stronger voice in their communities.

In 2015-2016, EFID strengthened the community of practitioners working on dementia in Europe. A new financial instrument, the “Capacity Strengthening Fund”, was created to achieve this objective. The Fund supported joint-projects and go-and-see visits that created partnerships and shared learning among practitioners.

In spring 2017, the awards “Valuing the expertise of people living with dementia” selected 12 more initiatives that value the expertise of people with dementia and create the condition for peer-support and public expression.

EFID acts as a catalyst for creating learning and partnerships among the awardees and other organisations, with the aim of strengthening the role played by civil society in supporting dementia-friendly initiatives in Europe. A series of workshops and conferences have been organised in the past years. Read more about EFID’s workshops..

During the years 2019-2020 EFID will work towards the following goals:

  • Valuing the expertise of people living with dementia
  • Strengthening the dementia friendly community approach across Europe
  • Disseminating the knowledge and good practice of the awardees
