Spreading a Legacy For the Future – European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia (EFID) – Awards 2020
People living with dementia are among the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The main problems have been isolation, lack of social contact, knowledge of technology. All of these can contribute to the deterioration of their health.
In this light, this year “Spreading a Legacy For the Future – European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia (EFID) – Awards 2020” were distributed to those initiatives that specifically found solutions to the challenges created by the pandemic.
Nine awardees were selected to be rewarded with a total of €67.500 to go into supporting their efforts to help people living with dementia who have been particularly hit by the pandemic.
Because 2020 also marks the tenth and final year of EFID, a special relevance in the selection was given to those projects that could demonstrate how they are going to spread the EFID legacy in the years to come.
The EFID legacy consists in the key learnings on dementia gained through the previous awards, the studies conducted and the capacity development workshops held in the past years. Moreover, part of the legacy is the EFID approach to an inclusive community which values all its members and helps them to meet their basic needs so that they can live with dignity, engage actively, and contribute to their community.
Awardees were chosen for their ability to adapt creatively to the current situation while maintaining and creating partnerships with different stakeholders and listening to the needs of their communities. They were able to improve the lives of informal carers assisting their relatives; reduce the decline in the condition due to lack of stimulation; find, defend and improve the lives of people living with dementia at home and in nursing homes.
